Navigational, Informational or Transactional query?
Fact: 80% of the web queries are informational with about 10% of each being navigational and transactional.
Characteristics of Navigational Searching:
- Queries containing Company/Business/Organization/People Names
- Queries containing domain suffixes
- Queries with “web” as the source
- Queries Length less than 3
- Searcher viewing the first search engine results page
Characteristics of Transactional searching:
- Queries containing terms related to movie, songs lyrics, images, humor
- Queries with “obtaining” (something)
- Queries with download terms
- Queries relating to Images, Audio or Video collections
- Queries with “entertainment” terms
- Queries with “interact” terms (buy, chat, etc)
- Queries with movies, Songs, Lyrics, Images and Multimedia or Compression file extension (zip, rar, etc)
Characteristics of Informational Searching:
- Uses question words
- Queries with natural language terms
- Queries containing Informational terms
- Queries that were beyond the first query submitted
- Queries where the searcher viewed multiple results page
- Queries length greater than 2
- Queries that don’t meet criteria for navigational or transactional
